Things to Do in Hyde Park, NY: FDR, Vanderbilt, and Where to Eat
Hyde Park, NY packs a full fall day into one stretch of Route 9: the nation's first presidential library, two guided house tours that run on first come, first served tickets, Eleanor Roosevelt's cottage, and the public restaurants of the Culinary Institute of America. The things to do in Hyde Park, NY reward a plan, because the FDR Library is open 9AM to 6PM through October and the house tours can sell out early on fall weekends. Here is how to run the day for two, with hours from each site's own page, and the drive to Farmers Choice Fishkill at the end.
Where should a Hyde Park day start: the FDR Library or the Home of FDR?
Start at the Henry A. Wallace Visitor Center, which sells tickets for both. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, at 4079 Albany Post Road, is the first presidential library in the country and runs its own admission: open seven days a week, 9AM to 6PM from April through October and 9AM to 5PM from November through March, closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Tickets can be bought online through the Library's hours and tickets page or at the visitor center. Inside are the museum's interactive galleries, its theaters, and artifacts from the Roosevelt years.
The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Springwood, is a National Park Service site on the same grounds and works differently. The house is seen by guided tour only, about 45 minutes through fifteen rooms on two floors, and tickets are sold first come, first served at the visitor center, with no reservations for individuals. The tour schedule changes seasonally, so check the park's hours page for current times. The park says plainly that October tours may sell out early, and that school groups can reserve an entire morning in its busy seasons, so on a fall Saturday the order is: visitor center first, house ticket in hand, then the Library while you wait for your tour time. Allow the 5 to 10 minute walk from the visitor center to the tour's starting point at the stables.
The grounds hold gardens and trails, Sara Roosevelt's Rose Garden, and the burial site where Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt rest. Check the park's alerts page the morning you go for any closures. Leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds and trails, not inside the buildings.
Ticket details are on the park's site.
Can you tour the Vanderbilt Mansion in the fall?
Yes. The Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site is two miles north of the Library on Route 9, by the Library's driving directions. The mansion is seen on a guided tour, and the park warns that school groups can reserve whole mornings from March through October, so tour times sometimes shift. Check the park's hours page or call 845-444-9166 for the current schedule before you drive up.
Even without a ticket, the grounds are worth the stop. There is no entrance fee for the grounds, and the formal gardens step down the hillside in tiers, the work of four landscape designers between 1901 and 1934. The Overlook faces the Hudson River, and Bard Rock is open to walkers every day during park hours; vehicle access to its small lot is limited on weekends, holidays and in winter, so plan on reaching it on foot.
Val-Kill: Eleanor Roosevelt's cottage
Val-Kill Cottage, the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site, is the third national park site in town. The tour runs 30 minutes through three rooms on the first floor, and free tickets are issued first come, first served at the Stone Cottage Visitor Center, because the house is small. Tour schedules change seasonally, so confirm the days and hours on the park's page or by calling 845-229-9422 before you go.
Which Culinary Institute of America restaurants are open to the public?
Four, all on the campus at 1946 Campus Drive on Route 9, three miles north of Poughkeepsie by the restaurants' own directions, and all run by students under CIA chefs. Reservations are recommended at the three dining rooms, the campus is cashless, and visitor parking is in the two-story deck at Anton Plaza, with a terrace looking over the Hudson.
- The Bocuse Restaurant serves classic French cooking with modern technique, Tuesday through Saturday, lunch 11:30AM to 1PM and dinner 6PM to 8:30PM.
- American Bounty Restaurant cooks regional, seasonal food on the same Tuesday through Saturday schedule, lunch 11:30AM to 1PM and dinner 6PM to 8:30PM.
- Ristorante Caterina de' Medici, in the Colavita Center for Italian Food, serves regional Italian dinners Tuesday through Saturday, 6PM to 8:30PM; it is closed for lunch this semester.
- Apple Pie Bakery Café is the drop-in option: Monday through Friday, 8AM to 4PM, order at the counter, no reservations, with bread, sandwiches, salads and pastry from the baking and pastry students and a hot lunch menu from 11AM.
The academic calendar sets the closures. The three restaurants close on Sundays, Mondays and major holidays, plus posted dates that this fall include October 13, October 27 to 29, November 3 and November 25 to December 1, with a special Monday opening on November 23 and a winter break from December 18 to January 7, 2027. The bakery café is closed on weekends and on October 5, 12 and 26, November 2 and November 25 to December 2, with a winter break from December 21 to 31, and opens at 11AM on October 19 and November 9. Each restaurant's Plan Your Visit page carries the current list.
Where else can you eat on Route 9 in Hyde Park?
Albany Post Road is Route 9 through town, which is why the Library's address reads 4079 Albany Post Road while its directions send you up Route 9. Two stops on the same road, by their addresses:
- Coppola's, 4167 Albany Post Road, cooks the Southern Italian food the Coppola brothers brought from Naples when they opened their first restaurant in Poughkeepsie in 1961. Hours are Monday through Saturday 11:30AM to 9PM, Sunday brunch 10:30AM to 2PM and Sunday dinner from noon to 9PM.
- Hyde Park Pizza & Gyros, 4290 Albany Post Road, is open Tuesday through Thursday 11AM to 9PM, Friday and Saturday 11AM to 10PM and Sunday noon to 8PM, closed Mondays.
For a longer food list, Poughkeepsie is four miles south of the Library by its directions, and our Walkway Over the Hudson day trip covers the waterfront end of it.
The drive from Hyde Park to Farmers Choice Fishkill
The closest Farmers Choice to Hyde Park is the Fishkill store, and our page for Hyde Park puts the drive at about 19 miles and 28 minutes: Route 9 south the whole way, through Poughkeepsie, ending near the Route 9 and I-84 shopping area. Farmers Choice Fishkill is at 18 Westage Drive, has on-site parking, and keeps evening hours that fit a day that ran late at Vanderbilt: it closes at 10PM Sunday through Wednesday and at 11PM Thursday through Saturday, opening at 8AM every day. Mornings are the quietest time to shop there; Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest.
Two things to have ready at the door: a valid government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older, since New York adult-use asks for no medical card, and, if you like, an order placed ahead. Order Now on the Fishkill menu before the drive and most orders are ready inside an hour; walk-ins are welcome too.
Last rule, and the one that matters at these three sites: a purchase stays sealed until you are home. Springwood, Val-Kill and the Vanderbilt estate are National Park Service land, where our guide to New York cannabis laws explains that federal rules apply, and New York does not allow consuming cannabis in a vehicle, moving or parked. Save it for home, along with the day's photographs.
A fall day in Hyde Park, in order
- Morning. Henry A. Wallace Visitor Center: Home of FDR ticket first, then the Library.
- Midday. Lunch at American Bounty or The Bocuse Restaurant (Tuesday to Saturday), or the Apple Pie Bakery Café on a weekday.
- Afternoon. Vanderbilt Mansion tour, then the gardens and the Overlook, and Val-Kill if its schedule fits.
- Evening. Route 9 south to Fishkill, about 28 minutes.
