Things to Do in Hopewell Junction, NY: Depot, Rail Trail, and Restaurants

The Farmers Choice Team

Things to do in Hopewell Junction, NY come in a tight loop this fall: the restored 1873 Hopewell Depot Museum at 36 Railroad Avenue opens Saturdays from 10AM to 2PM, the 13.4-mile William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail ends at its parking lot, and the Route 82 restaurants sit inside the hamlet. Farmers Choice Fishkill, the closest Farmers Choice, is about 7 miles and 16 minutes west. Every hour and date below comes from the venue's own page, its online ordering page, or a county or town page, and the Depot asks visitors to check its social accounts before a Saturday visit, since its schedule can change and its site posts no season end date.

What is there to do in Hopewell Junction, NY?

Hopewell Junction is a hamlet of the Town of East Fishkill in Dutchess County, one of six hamlets the town code recognizes alongside Arthursburg, Fishkill Plains, Gayhead, Peckslip and Stormville. The town's own history page says the hamlet sprang up near the station when the railroad from Dutchess Junction to Pine Plains was completed in 1869, took the name Hopewell Junction when a second line crossed the first there, and became the business center of a town that today covers about 53 square miles with about 30,000 people.

For an adult day out, that railroad history is the plan:

  • The Hopewell Depot Museum, the restored station at the trail's southern end, on a Saturday morning.
  • The Dutchess Rail Trail, which starts at the Depot's lot and runs 13.4 paved miles to the Walkway Over the Hudson.
  • Lunch or dinner on Route 82, where Giardino Italiano and Hopewell Hot Bagels post their hours.
  • The last Stormville Airport flea market of 2026, on Saturday, November 7, in the neighboring hamlet.
  • The drive west to Farmers Choice Fishkill.

Is the Hopewell Depot Museum open in the fall?

On Saturdays, for as long as its season runs. The Hopewell Depot Museum's site says the Depot is open for the season on Saturdays from 10AM to 2PM, posts no end date for that season, and says the operating schedule is subject to change, so it asks visitors to check its social media accounts before planning a visit. The museum is 100 percent volunteer run, from the board to the tour guides, and its contact number is 845-226-7003.

The station itself dates to 1873. The Town of East Fishkill's history page says it was built closer to the Hopewell Inn, moved to its present spot around 1905, and, after a fire in 1986, restored by the Hopewell Depot Restoration Corporation. The museum's project list shows the depot and its tower fully restored, a community pavilion built, and a caboose at the Depot that is listed as 81 percent restored. The museum's stated mission is to be the southeastern gateway and visitors' center for the rail trail, so the Saturday window is the one to plan a walk around.

Where does the Dutchess Rail Trail end?

At the Depot's parking lot. Dutchess County's page calls the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail a 13.4-mile continuous paved rail trail, and its two ends are the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie and the restored Hopewell Depot; the towns in between are LaGrange, Wappinger and East Fishkill. The trailhead lot sits on Railroad Avenue just off Route 376, per the county's parking page, and the trail is open dawn to dusk.

Two long trails meet here. Per the county's FAQ, the Maybrook Trailway, another piece of the Empire State Trail, starts just past the old Depot and reaches 23 miles toward Brewster, so the same lot serves a walk north toward Poughkeepsie or the other way toward Brewster. This post carries the town; the trail has its own. Our Dutchess Rail Trail guide walks the whole route, parking lot by parking lot, with the county's rules for bikes and dogs.

Route 82 restaurants near the Depot

The Depot's own Services in Hopewell map lists the hamlet's eateries, delis, banks and hardware stores for trail users, and two of the restaurants on it post hours online.

  • Giardino Italiano, 827 Route 82. Its online ordering listing, rather than a site of its own, gives Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday 11AM to 9PM, Thursday to Saturday 11AM to 10PM, closed Monday, with takeout, delivery and reservations.
  • Hopewell Hot Bagels, 792 Route 82 in the Trinka Lane Plaza. Kettle-boiled bagels, breakfast sandwiches and coffee since 1986, open Monday to Friday 6AM to 3PM and Saturday and Sunday 6AM to 2PM. The grill closes 15 minutes before closing time.

Hopewell Hot Bagels opens earliest, which makes it the trail stop, and Giardino Italiano stays open until 9PM or 10PM for dinner.

The last Stormville flea market of the year

Stormville is one of East Fishkill's six hamlets, and the Stormville Airport Antique Show and Flea Market at 428 Route 216 runs its final 2026 date on Saturday, November 7, from 8AM to 4PM, rain or shine. The market's own page covers admission, parking and its no-pets rule, and says shoppers find everything from antiques and collectibles to arts and crafts and new merchandise. Destination Dutchess adds that hundreds of vendors set up. The market is in its 56th year, and November 7 is the last date on its 2026 list after the October 10 and 11 weekend.

How far is Farmers Choice Fishkill from Hopewell Junction?

About 7 miles and 16 minutes. Our Hopewell Junction page gives the route: Route 82 to Route 52 west, then toward the Route 9 corridor, where Farmers Choice Fishkill sits at 18 Westage Drive, Route 9 at I-84, and has on-site parking. The Fishkill hours run 8AM to 10PM from Sunday to Wednesday, then 8AM to 11PM from Thursday to Saturday; the quietest stretch is the morning, and the busiest is Friday and Saturday evening.

Two categories worth a look after a day on the trail are flower and pre-rolls, both on the live Fishkill menu, and if a label or a cart-and-battery match raises a question, a Farm Hand answers it at the counter. Order Now on the Fishkill menu and most orders are ready inside an hour. Every visit starts with a valid government-issued photo ID that shows you are 21 or older; a medical card is not part of it.

Coming from the other direction, Wappingers Falls is about 6 miles from the store on Route 9, and our things to do in Fishkill post covers the Main Street Historic District and the Van Wyck Homestead on Route 9 for the rest of the weekend.

Keep a purchase sealed until home

Dutchess County's trail rules say smoking is prohibited in every county park, the rail trail included, and New York's law on vehicles is just as plain: no consuming cannabis in a car, moving or parked. So the Depot lot, the trail and the drive back on Route 82 are all off limits, and the bag from Fishkill waits for home. Our guide to New York cannabis laws sorts the rest of the state's rules by place.
