Fall Is Coming to the Hudson Valley: Your New Paltz Guide

A good New Paltz fall day comes down to three things: catching the color on the Shawangunk Ridge in early to mid October, getting parked at Mohonk Preserve or Minnewaska before the lots fill, and saving the orchards and the village for the afternoon. This New Paltz fall guide walks through each one, including the parts that go wrong for people who show up without a plan.

Labor Day weekend is the hinge. One week the ridge is still summer green and the parking lots are full of climbers, the next the light has changed, the mornings need a jacket, and everyone within three hours of here starts planning a drive up Route 299. New Paltz does fall better than almost anywhere in the state, and we get to watch the whole season arrive from the front window.

When does fall color peak around New Paltz?

The ridge turns first. That surprises visitors who plan around a single peak weekend, but the Shawangunks run several hundred feet above the valley floor and the temperature difference shows up in the leaves.

Rough sequence in a normal year: the first honest color appears on the high carriage roads in early October, the ridge peaks around the middle of the month, and the village, the orchards and the river flats hold on a week or two longer. That staggering is a gift. A trip that misses peak up top usually lands right in the middle of it down below.

Weather moves all of it. A dry September pulls the whole calendar forward, a warm wet one pushes it back and mutes the reds. Check a foliage tracker in the few days before you drive, not a month out.

Where do you park for Mohonk and Minnewaska in the fall?

October weekends are the busiest days of the year on this ridge, and parking is the whole game.

Mohonk Preserve wants a membership or day pass and an early start. The West Trapps lot is the one everybody aims for, and on an October Saturday it can be full before ten. The Preserve's own advice for peak weekends is to arrive early, or to park at the Visitor Center on Route 44/55 and climb the East Trapps Connector, a quarter mile of stone steps, up to the carriage roads and the Trapps cliffs.

The Bonticou Crag climb from the Spring Farm Trailhead is the better call anyway if you want a short hike with a real payoff, and the optional scramble at the top is the most fun a mile of trail can be. Spring Farm fills early on peak weekends too. The Undercliff and Overcliff carriage road loop, 5.2 miles from West Trapps, is the version that works with tired knees, a stroller, or anyone who would rather look at the cliffs than climb them.

Minnewaska State Park charges a vehicle entry fee, and on good-weather days the Lake Minnewaska lot closes intermittently when it reaches capacity. The Lake Minnewaska loop gives you cliff top views inside the first half mile, which is the best effort to payoff ratio in the county, and the sky lake ringed in color is the photograph everyone comes for.

If both are full, and in October they will be, the River-to-Ridge Trail is free, has its own lot at 41 Springtown Road just west of the Route 299 bridge over the Wallkill, and hands you the whole wall of the ridge across open farmland. On a color weekend that view does most of the work anyway.

Orchards, cider and the farm stand run

Twin Star Orchards is minutes from the village and does the full version. It is the home orchard of Brooklyn Cider House, with u-pick apples in the rows, a cider tasting room, and wood-fired pizza and burgers that keep the pavilion busy all weekend. Go early in the day or late in the afternoon, because the middle of a Saturday in October is a scene.

Beyond that, the Route 299 and Route 208 corridor toward Gardiner is lined with family orchards and farm stands running weekend picking from September into late October. The unglamorous advice is the useful one: call ahead or check a social feed before you drive, because what is ready to pick changes week to week and the good varieties go fast.

The village, when the legs are done

Water Street Market is the right decompression after a morning on the ridge. Open air shops, a bookstore, a courtyard built for sitting still with a cider while somebody in your group finishes browsing.

Main Street climbs the hill above it with the restaurants, and the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail runs flat and shaded straight through town for anyone whose legs have already done their climbing. The New Paltz Trestle, where the trail crosses the Wallkill River just south of Springtown Road, is about two miles north of Main Street and gives you the color from a completely different angle.

Two small things that make the day work

Layers, and more of them than you think. The ridge runs meaningfully colder than the parking lot, and a still, sunny afternoon on the carriage roads turns sharp the moment the sun drops behind the cliffs.

And go on a weekday if you possibly can. The same hike that involves circling a full lot on a Saturday is quiet and easy on a Tuesday, and the orchards are calmer too. Fall here is worth taking a day off for.
