A Beacon Day Trip: Dia, Main Street, and the Mountain

The Farmers Choice Team

A Beacon, NY day trip works best from Friday to Monday, the four days Dia Beacon is open, and one daylight run covers the museum, a walk on Main Street and, if your legs allow, the climb up Mount Beacon. Dia opens at 10AM at 3 Beekman Street, and Scenic Hudson's Mount Beacon Park, where the trail starts, closes at dusk, so the order of the day mostly sets itself. Every hour, date and rule below comes from the official page that sets it, read the week this was written.

When is Dia Beacon open?

Dia Beacon is open Friday to Monday from 10AM to 5PM, and Dia notes that the hours change seasonally. It is closed Tuesday to Thursday and on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and visitors are asked to arrive before 4:30PM for admission.

Dia suggests advance reservations but does not require them, and it cannot refund or exchange a ticket with less than 24 hours notice. Tickets are on Dia's Beacon visit page.

Beacon and Newburgh residents get in free every day. On the last Sunday of each month, Dia's Hudson Valley Free Day, residents of 14 counties including Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Putnam and Westchester get in free too. The next one is Sunday, October 25, from 10AM to 5PM, reserved through Dia's free admission request.

On-site parking is limited, and on busy weekends and holidays Dia says drivers may be asked to park at the Metro-North Beacon station, half a mile and about an 8 to 10 minute walk away. That station is served by Metro-North trains from Grand Central Terminal and Poughkeepsie.

What is on view at Dia Beacon this fall?

Dia Beacon fills a former Nabisco box-printing factory built in 1929 on the banks of the Hudson River, nearly 300,000 square feet with more than 34,000 square feet of skylights, and it opened as a museum in May 2003. Dia says each gallery was designed for one artist's work, from Richard Serra's Torqued Ellipses to Michael Heizer's North, East, South, West.

The new exhibition, Haegue Yang: Through, opened on October 10, 2026. Dia calls it the first time an artist has conceived newly commissioned works that cross multiple galleries on both of the museum's levels, with dark, draped venetian blinds on the first floor and vertical metal louvers aligned to the columns downstairs. Walter De Maria: 360˚ I Ching opens next, on November 14.

Free public tours run every Saturday and Sunday at 12PM and 1:30PM with admission, and no reservation is needed. Food and drinks, water bottles included, are not permitted in the galleries, and large bags and backpacks go to the coat-and-bag check. The Dia Beacon Cafe, open Friday to Monday from 9:45AM to 4:45PM, serves house-made soups, salads and sandwiches, so lunch can happen without moving the car.

Walking Beacon's Main Street

Destination Dutchess describes Beacon's Main Street as a walkable corridor of restaurants, shops and art, and the City of Beacon's comprehensive plan gives it a length of one mile. The plan also sketches the history behind the street: Fishkill Landing was a commercial port by the mid-1700s, Matteawan grew up around mills on Fishkill Creek, and the two villages merged in 1913 to form the City of Beacon. Their growth, the plan says, still shows in the two- and three-story brick buildings lining each end of Main Street. Public comments summarized in the plan noted that the length can make walking the whole street impractical, so plan on two shorter walks, one at each end.

The City of Beacon links a downtown public parking map from its Visiting Beacon page, which is worth a look before you circle the blocks. For more on this side of the river, our guide to things to do in Beacon, Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls covers the neighboring towns, and our Hudson River fall foliage cruise guide lists the October sailings from the Beacon waterfront.

How hard is the Mount Beacon hike?

Steep, in Scenic Hudson's own words, with switchbacks that keep the climb manageable. Scenic Hudson's Mount Beacon Park, at 788 Wolcott Avenue, covers 15 acres and is free and open year round from dawn to dusk.

The hike starts on a staircase that follows the course of the Beacon Incline Railway, which Scenic Hudson describes as once the world's steepest funicular. Observation platforms at the top of the stairs preview the summit view, a panorama Scenic Hudson describes as stretching from the Hudson Highlands to the Catskill Mountains. It also points to the South Mount Beacon fire tower, which it describes as a mile away, where climbing 60 feet up the tower opens a view that on a clear day reaches from Manhattan to Albany.

The park has a seasonal restroom and two Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations, available for a fee, and dogs are welcome on a leash. Since the park closes at dusk, start the climb with enough daylight to get back down.

Finishing at Farmers Choice Fishkill

Farmers Choice Fishkill is at 18 Westage Drive, where Route 9 meets I-84, about 5 miles and 10 minutes from Beacon by Route 52 or I-84, and it has its own parking lot. It is open 8AM to 10PM Sunday to Wednesday and 8AM to 11PM Thursday to Saturday. Mornings are the quietest stretch there, and Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest.

The Fishkill menu is filtered by category from flower and pre-rolls to edibles, vaporizers and beverages. Our Beacon page has the route from town.

Keep a purchase sealed until home

Nothing from the store gets opened on the way. New York's Office of Cannabis Management says it is illegal to use cannabis in a motor vehicle, and that neither drivers nor passengers can open any cannabis packaging while in a vehicle. Scenic Hudson's visitor guide says no smoking or vaping in its parks, so a purchase stays sealed until you are home. Our guide to New York cannabis laws covers where consumption is and is not allowed.

The plan is Beacon first, Fishkill second. Order Now from the Fishkill menu once the day is done, and most orders are ready inside an hour. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older.
